1001 Books Before Kindergarten Graduation

Thursday, October 3, 2019 Graduation Ceremony

Tonight we welcome 8 more children (2 not pictured) into our 1001 Books Before Kindergarten alumni group! Congratulations on reading 1001 BOOKS!

AAPLD has participated in 100 Books Before Kindergarten since 2013 and has over 700 participants. An Algonquin card is required for this program (It should start with 21488). If you don’t have an Algonquin card, don’t worry! Your home library most likely also offers this program and a comprehensive list for Illinois may be found here. The program is part of a nation wide early literacy initiative and more information on the national program may be found here. Sign up your little one today!

What is 1001 Books Before Kindergarten?

This is an all-year-long reading incentive for the very young. Parents who participate in this program commit to read at least 1,001 books to their children before they enter kindergarten. Parents receive a 3-ring binder with information about the program, the Library, the children’s collection, recommended books, the six early literacy skills and five early literacy practices outlined in Every Child Ready to Read®, and a book log for their first 100 titles. Parents will track all books read to their child in their book log. Books can be repeated multiple times and can include any titles read during storytime, at home, at preschool, daycare, etc. Titles read for summer and winter reading programs can also be included.
